June 2010   The Facts about Ultra Violet Radiation (UVR)

 Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) is high energy radiation from the Sun, which is capable of causing damage to living organisms. Ultraviolet radiation is classified by wavelength into three regions.

1. UVA- is thought to contribute to premature aging and wrinkling of the skin and has recently been implicated as a cause of skin cancer.

2. UVB - more dangerous than UVA and has been implicated as a major cause of skin cancers, sun burning and cataracts.

3. UVC- is extremely dangerouse but doeas not reach the earth's surface due to absorption in the atmosphere.

Ultra Violet Protection Factor (UPF) - this rating indicates how much UVR is blocked by material. For example, a material with UPF rating of 20 would only allow 1/20th of the hazardous UVR falling on its surafce to pass through it. This means that this material would reduce the UVR exposure by a factor of 20. Stated another way, this material would block out 95% of the UVR and transmit only 5%. UPF 50+ blocks out more that 98%.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) - this rating is used for sunscreens, which refers to the blocking strength og the sunscreen and the length of time it protects. For example a SPF of 50 will allow you or your child to stay in the sun 50 times longer than the normal time it takes unprotected skin to change colour or burn. If your skin burns in 10 min, then your protection will lat up to 500 minutes.

Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out in the sun, because the chemicals need time to absorb into the skin. The best sunscreen to choose has a broad spectrum protection that can block out UVA & UVB rays.

 May 2010  Ten Top Tips for Protecting Children in The Sun

1. Set Good Habits For The Future. Teaching children safe sun habits while they are young sets a good pattern for later life.

2. Remember you can burn in the UK Sun. The Great British sun is quite capable of burning your child! Take extra care at home as well as abroad.

3. Use Shade. Keep babies in complete shade: under trees, umberellas, canopies or indoors. Provide shade for prams & buggies if possible.

4. Cover them Up. When outdoors protect a babies skin with loose-fitting clothes and wide brimmed hats that shade their face, neck & ears.

5. Wear Sunglasses. Buy good quality, wraparound sunglasses for children as sooon as they can wear them.

6. Find Hats they like. Encourage children to wear hats with brims, especially if they are not wearing glasses. The wider the brim the more skin will be shades from the sun.

7. Use Sunscreen wisely. Use at least a factor 15 Suncreen . Apply to areas that cannot be protected by clothing and choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies skin. These products are less likely to contain alcohol or fragrances that might irriatet the skin or cause allergic reactions.

8. Apply sunscreen generously and regularly. Put some on before chidren go outdoors and re apply often as one application will not last all day.

9. Don't forget school times. Remember play times and lunch breaks. Give children a hat to wear and if they can take sunscreen to school supply one that it easy to apply.

10. Avoid being in the sun for long periods and especially between the hours of 10am-2pm in the northern hemisphere.
